The perfumes of the Gardens of the Alhambra and elsewhere in Spain waft through the superb Piano Concerto by Manuel de Falla played for us this week by one of the greatest pianists of the past 50 years. Brazilian pianist Nelson Freire is a master virtuoso whose ease as a musical storyteller conceals one of the most formidable techniques of any pianist. The Villa-Lobos piano concerto, Momoprecoce, also on the program was written to evoke the world of children during the famous Brazilian carnival season. Momoprecoce was dedicated to Brazil’s first internationally famous pianist, Magda Tagliaferro. Our superb Grand Rapids Symphony chorus opens and closes the program with an atmospheric contribution by the women to Debussy’s ethereal Nocturnes. The full-throated cry of the entire ensemble is heard in Villa-Lobos’s Choros No. 10 which features Amazonian bird song and ends with an ecstatic poem by the composer’s friend, Catulo da Paixão Cearense.
