Marcelo Lehninger Conductor | Sonia Goulart Piano
Johannes Brahms spent nearly two decades laboriously hewing his First Symphony from granite. Heartened by its success, Brahms quickly dashed off his cheerful Symphony No. 2 while summering along the shores of a beautiful Austrian lake. A friend who was among the first to hear it before its premiere told him, “It’s all rippling streams, blue sky, sunshine and cool, green shadows.” Brahms would compose four symphonies in all, but his bucolic Second Symphony remained his personal favorite. Frédéric Chopin, who was 20 years old when he completed his Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, composed to showcase his stunning virtuosity. His music is perfectly suited for Brazilian pianist Sonia Goulart, winner of the Rencontres Musicales Internationales Award in Brussels among other prizes. Music Director Marcelo Lehninger’s mother joins the Grand Rapids Symphony to perform Chopin’s brilliant and beautiful concerto with its exquisite nocturnal second movement.
