Marcelo Lehninger Conductor | Christopher Kantner Flute
Our Music Director Marcelo Lehninger offers one of the greatest of all orchestral blockbusters on these concerts in Richard Strauss ambitious tone poem ‘A Hero’s Life’ (Ein Heldenleben). Based on Strauss’s readings of the philosopher Nietzsche, it is also a thinly disguised trip through the ego of the composer himself.
Tongue-in-cheek aside, it is a magnificent test for any great orchestra and allows our concertmaster James Crawford a chance to shine as the ‘voice’ of the hero’s beloved. Also thought to represent the composer’s wife, the volatile and quixotic former opera soprano, Pauline. Principal Flautist Christopher Kantner steps forward to be the soloist in Mozart’s effervescent Flute Concerto written for a Dutch flautist. In Brazilian composer M. Carmargo Guanrieri’s name, the ‘M’ stands for Mozart! Don’t blame the composer himself for an ego the size of Richard Strauss’s. The ‘Mozart’ was given to Guarnieri by his mother at birth.
