Villa-Lobos Chôros No.10 Rasga o Coração (It Tears your Heart)

Marcelo Lehninger Conductor  | Nelson Freire Piano | Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus Pearl Shangkuan, Director

The perfumes from the flowers of Spain’s famous Gardens of the Alhambra seem to waft from Manuel de Falla’s exotic piano concerto, Nights in the Gardens of Spain, performed for us this week by one of today's most renowned pianists. A lifelong friend of Marcelo Lehninger, Nelson Freire is a master virtuoso whose ease as a musical storyteller conceals one of the most formidable piano techniques of our time. The Brazilian pianist also joins the Grand Rapids Symphony for Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Momoprecoce, a fantasy for piano and orchestra, which evokes the world of children during the famous Carnival of Brazil season. Our superb Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus, as well as our fabulous percussion section, will be heard in Villa-Lobos’s Choros No. 10, subtitled "Rasga o Coração” or (“It Tears Open the Heart”). In addition to the text of an ecstatic poem by the composer’s friend, Catulo da Paixão Cearense, it features hints of bird songs such as the call of the Azulão da mata, a rare bird of the Brazilian rain forest. The program begins with an encore performance of Bolero, Ravel’s most famous work and an audience favorite, which opened the Grand Rapids Symphony’s 2017-18 season in September.
