Russian romance is at the heart of this concert. Erich Korngold, a Viennese Wunderkind came to America just in advance of the Nazi takeover of his native land. Along with Max Steiner, he virtually invented the genre of symphonic film scores. From melodies in those scores he fashioned a Violin Concerto for none other than the Russian born violinist Jascha Heifetz, still considered the greatest fiddler who ever put bow to string. The surging nostalgic sweetness of the score has made it an audience favorite in the last fifty years. Heiftez left Imperial Russia never to return and the most powerful evocation of that grand epoch is beautifully captured in Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.  Each movement of the original piano suite evokes, places, tales and people of that vanished empire, now beautifully clothed in a brilliant orchestration by Maurice Ravel.
