Pearl Shangkuan, Chorus Director | Katy York, Chorus President
The Grand Rapids Symphony Chorus was organized and founded in 1962 with the guidance and support of Mary Ann Keeler. After over 50 years of service as a volunteer organization, the chorus is dedicated to achieving excellence in choral presentations. With over 120 members, under the direction of Dr. Pearl Shangkuan since 2004, the chorus has reached an admirable level of artistic choral performance.
The chorus performs major works with the orchestra during the Richard and Helen DeVos Classical Series and Fox Motors Pops Series concerts.
Auditioning for the Chorus
The chorus actively seeks new members who are experienced singers and have music reading ability. New singers may join the chorus throughout the season by private audition, held throughout the year, with major auditions scheduled in the spring, fall, and mid-year.
To start the process toward an audition, please click here to complete the audition application. The administrative assistant for the chorus will be in touch with you soon with further details.
Our 10-minute audition includes vocal exercises to test voice range and quality, tonal memory, and rhythmic and melodic sight singing. This is a friendly audition; we do not require a “prepared” piece.
The chorus rehearses Monday evenings during the academic year, 7:30-9:45pm in the Calvin College Covenant Fine Arts Center.
If you enjoy singing and want to be part of an excellent musical ensemble, join us. For more information about the chorus, please click HERE.
