ArtPrize, the radically open international art competition, is underway in downtown Grand Rapids. Among the paintings, sculptures, murals and collages are inspiring performing art entries, including one commissioned by the Grand Rapids Symphony.
With "Mathias Alten Triptych" three Grand Rapids composers bring the works of painter Mathias Alten (1871-1938) to life. Mathias Alten lived and traveled around West Michigan, creating beautiful Impressionist scenes of Michigan life and landscapes. Composers Bill Ryan (director of Grand Valley State University's New Music Ensemble), Jeremy Crosmer (GRS assistant principal cellist), and Alexander Miller, (GRS assistant principal oboe), each wrote one movement of the piece interpreting a different painting by Alten. The three paintings represented in each movement are "The Grand River," "Approaching Storm" and "Gulls of Leland." The paintings can be viewed at the George and Barbara Gordon Galley on the Pew Campus, which holds the largest public collection of Alten works.
There will be two performances of "Mathias Alten Triptych" by six Grand Rapids Symphony musicians. Visit the Loosemore Auditorium on Grand Valley's Pew Campus Saturday, September 26 at 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and vote code 61158! The composition will also be available to ArtPrizers throughout the competition at St. Cecilia Music Center.
If you attended LiveArts last April and want to relive the magic, visit St. Cecilia Music Center during ArtPrize to hear "I Will Rise," composed by GRS Youth Chorus Conductor Sean Ivory with lyrics written by Nancy Patterson. The piece for chorus and orchestra was premiered at LiveArts by nearly 1,600 performers, including members of the GRS, the GRS Chorus and Youth Chorus, the GRS Youth Symphony, Opera Grand Rapids and 700 students from West Michigan schools. Stop by the venue to hear the piece, see the score and vote code 61388.
The GRS is also part of ArtPrize Tonight, a program designed to offer local and visiting ArtPrize participants a comprehensive, accessible rundown of evening events. Two GRS concerts, "Love, Lust & Rock 'n' Roll" and "Ravel's Piano Concerto," are included on the ArtPrize Tonight calendar. ArtPrize volunteers, sponsors and artists can receive 20% off tickets to these two concerts.
