This weekend, the Grand Rapids Pops orchestra will boldly go where no orchestra has gone before with "Star Trek: Live in Concert" on Saturday, October 17. In 2009, leading Hollywood director J.J. Abrams re-envisioned the Star Trek franchise with a hip cast, dazzling special effects and a thrilling musical score composed by Michael Giacchino for his 2009 film. Join the orchestra on an intergalactic journey as they perform the complete score of "Star Trek" (2009) while the film plays on the big screen in high definition at DeVos Performance Hall!
Grand Rapids Comic Con is occurring right next door at DeVos Place throughout the weekend, and the Grand Rapids Pops is participating as an official sponsor. There are several exciting events and special guest appearances planned throughout the weekend, including Star Trek celebrities Marina Sirtis from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and Greg Ellis, whose character meets a grisly end in the 2009 film. For more information and tickets, visit the GR Comic Con website at www.grcomiccon.com.
The Grand Rapids Pops also has some fun festivities in store for concertgoers on Saturday. Several pre-concert activities are planned for guests in the Keeler Lobby, including a space-themed photo booth provided by Allied Photo/Photo Evo. Sip on the Orion's Belt, a signature cocktail created for the evening that is served at Quark's Bar in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
What's more, the local chapter of Starfleet International, an organization that organizes ways for Star Trek fans to give back to their communities, will appear in uniform to greet concertgoers upon their arrival. The group travels all over Michigan doing similar events, including at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in 2012.
