JoAnn Falletta Conductor | Fabio Bidini Piano
Long time Buffalo Philharmonic Music Director JoAnn Falletta takes us on an imaginary tour of fin de siècle Vienna, from the brilliant sunshine of the Mediterranean and a short detour right here at home with a delightfully witty new work for orchestra by our own Alexander Miller. The concert is bookended with two Viennese-flavored classics. Maurice Ravel evokes a swirling ballroom, ever more dizzying as the waltz accelerates to a frenzy. Richard Strauss’ love-letter to the mid-18th century Empress Maria Theresa, his finest comedy, Der Rosenkavalier, closes the evening with one infectious memorable waltz after another. And Mr. Miller cleverly hides the name of a musical instrument in his San Antonio Symphony celebration commission Scherzo Crypto. Let’s see if you can guess the answer during the performance!
