A line in an old Irish proverb says-“Dance as if no one is watching” suggesting that we abandon our inhibitions to free our creativity. These concerts showcase the creativity of dancing as all three composers use dances or dancing to move our hearts and our feet. Beethoven’s most genial and bucolic symphony is at the heart of the concert. It expresses his love of the countryside surrounding Vienna where he lived most of his creative life. Peasant dances and waltzes evoke a time long past. Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo based his second guitar concerto entirely on dances by the baroque composer Gaspar Sanz. Rodrigo had none other than the first great modern guitar virtuoso Andres Segovia as the premiere performer and inspirer of the title of ‘Fantasy for a Gentleman.’ And to test whether you can resist dancing in the aisles of DeVos Hall, Mexican composer Arturo Marquez wrote his Danzon No. 2, filled with the sunshine and rhythms of his native land just to tempt you out of your seat!
