Celebration of Soul 2010

Saturday, February 27, 2010

On Saturday, February 27, 2010, the Grammy nominated Grand Rapids Symphony continued its unique community collaboration by presenting the ninth annual “Symphony with Soul” Concert.  For the fifth year, the concert was preceded by the Celebration of Soul dinner and Legacy Awards presentation.  This exciting evening is a rare opportunity to recognize outstanding leaders who have served West Michigan, particularly the African-American community and enjoy an exquisite dinner followed by a world class orchestra concert.

We were pleased to honor the 2010 Legacy Award recipients Pastor Marvin and Dr. MaLinda Sapp. The community had the rare opportunity to recognize Marvin and MaLinda for their commitment to education, service, and bridge-building.  In honor of this recognition, Celebration of Soul guests had the privilege to hear 5-time Grammy award winner, Marvin Winans perform live!  They also had the opportunity, for the first time ever to hear Dove and Stellar Award winner, Marvin Sapp sing with his family during the Symphony with Soul concert!

§    5th Annual Celebration of Soul Dinner and Reception
The evening began with a three-course Louisiana inspired dinner at DeVos Place , Steelcase Ballroom C.  The 2010 Legacy Awards, highlighting extraordinary accomplishments and commitment to the advancement of the African-American community in West Michigan, were presented to Reverend Dr. Marvin and Dr. MaLinda Sapp.  Special guest, Marvin Winans performed as well as Grand Rapids Symphony Mosaic Scholars.  The evening ended with a post-concert reception where guests enjoyed dessert and had the opportunity to mingle with the Legacy Award recipients, Marvin Winans, members of the Grand Rapids Symphony, and members of the “Too Hot to Handel” production.

§    9th Annual Symphony with Soul Concert
Classical meets gospel in “Too Hot to Handel” presented in DeVos Performance Hall.  This dynamic and uplifting production hailed as “…the jazziest, most soulful reinterpretation of Handel’s Messiah…” captures the essential core of the original piece with an adaptation encompassing jazz, rock and funk.  The concert featured a collaboration of the Community Gospel Chorus directed by Duane Davis, the Grand Rapids Symphony, and renowned guest artists, Thomas Young, Vaneese Thomas, and Lillias White.

Proceeds from the dinner and concert benefited the Grand Rapids Symphony’s education programs which serve 77,000 West Michigan students; with a portion designated to the Mosaic Scholarship Fund (formerly Young, Gifted and Black).
