This concert is an example of the orchestra's dedication to diversity, the artistic excellence of its musicians, and the power of contemporary classical music. In addition, the performance will serve as a celebration of Associate Conductor John Varineau’s 25th Anniversary.

In Varineau’s honor, select members of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony will perform side-by-side the orchestra for the evening's opener  Berlioz’s “Roman Carnival.” Grand Rapids Symphony musicians Assistant Principal Cellist Alicia Eppinga and violinist Megan Crawford will move front and center for Miklos Roza’s “Sinfonia Concertante.”  Also featured will be the Michigan premiere of a work by the Puerto Rican-born Roberto Sierra. The performance of his composition is part of the Grand Rapids Symphony’s participation in the Sphinx Commissioning Consortium; a national initiative to bring the musical works of more Black and Latino composers into the concert hall.  In addition, the program will include John Adams  “Dr. Atomic Symphony.”  His work focuses on the character and personalities of those involved in the test of the first atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Following its 2005 premiere “Dr. Atomic” has received wide acclaim.
